Nelson's work is hand-built from brown or white stoneware, using minimal tools so that the creative process becomes part of daily routine. Pinching, coiling, carving or slab construction evolve from an intuitive repsonse to the malleable nature of clay. Surface decoration is often created by impressing natural textures, such as leaves or bark, into the clay. Glazes invented by the artist are based on traditional recipes. The exhibition features a variety of teapots, teabowls and large vases which are intended to accent the unique qualities of an individual plant or display a grouping of flowers in an unsual way. Susan Nelson has taught ceramics for 20 years at the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kansas. |
